Tipster: Jumbo Danny Willett to beat Richie Ramsay - 5 points @ 9-10 (betway) 4-5 (Betfair Sportsbook)
A co-sanctioned event that bookmakers have tried to place Lee Westwood and Louis Oosthuizen on another platform to the rest and they could be right. Ignore them though and we have a cracking event with another 8 from the world top-100 but a middle of the market containing some very talented locals. Seung Yul Noh was known to only a few of the weekend golf punters when winning back in 2010 but is now a solid PGA Tour member and a similar result couldn't be ruled out this week given the trials and efforts of the two favourites just four days previous. The key attributes for this week seem pretty solid. All the stats indicate that length is a huge advantage so that the par-5s can be exploited whilst an attacking but confident scrambling and putting technique will keep the game together. As such, Danny Willett makes considerable appeal against Richie Ramsey despite them both recently recovering from injury. Ramsay recently made his comeback after a neck injury and results are hugely promising. Form figures of 2/11/18 are extremely progressive and his game should reap rewards very soon. That will, however, be on the right type of track and he really does not convince that he has the game for the lengthy Kuala Lumpur course. Fairly short of the tee (ranking around 50) Ramsey may struggle to make enough scores on the Par-5s in order to compete with the bigger hitters, and with that stat proving vital and with no form on this particular track (redesigned and used again from 2010) he must be opposed. Englishman Willett has his own problems and has suffered with a bad back recently. Ironically, though, at times he has looked outstanding even carrying that niggle and finishes of 9th in the Alfred Dunhill, 13th in Dubai and 16th in Joburg are efforts that must compete here this week. The 63 he shot in the former was an incredible effort after he looked as if he couldn't stand up the night before and the 65 in Dubai came just days after jumping from a plane, a genius thing to do when suffering with back ailments. Fair play to him, though he withdrew from the Tshwane with symptoms and returned with a warm-up 37th in Morocco, an fairly average effort on a course where he has had much better finishes. I like the fact that he has had a few weeks off, he has the length to compete although it's his aggressive play that should reap dividends. Willett has already logged course form 3/17/6 so we know the game suits and he is expected to put in another of those mid-60s at some point in order to stay with the front of the field. Whilst not playing in 2013 due to the first back injury, he remains a good one to note for in-running betting especially if just 5 or 6 off the pace. He led the driving distance table in 2011, the GIR and par-4 scoring tables in 2012 and he simply has too much for his rival this week. Had Danny been proven fit, and I am awaiting an answer via twitter (although visual is always the best way) he would have ranked a stronger bet; for now, he rates a five pointer.
