Xin-Jun Zhang 1.5 points each-way @ 66-1 (Sportingbet) 50-1 okay now 66-1 (Corals)
Whilst it often makes for sad reading, looking back at past articles often finds a gem, and when doing so a couple of weeks ago I found a tip/bet on Xin-Jun Zhang for this event in 2013 and it all came flooding back....... The 27-year-old first caught the eye when finishing 13th in the HSBC at Shanghai in 2011 (including a 3rd round LOD 64) and his foray into the professional ranks started slowly but he had a sole top-10 in Charl Schwartzel's China Masters before being signed to Nike and taking off somewhat the year after. 2014 could have been a stellar year for Zhang, having an impressive run of form - 2/T8/2/dq/1/2/T9 and leading the PGA Tour of China before disaster struck - accused and found guilty of deliberately improving his scorecard and banned for six months. By all accounts, many players are unwilling to talk much about this and it is clear that many are deeply unimpressed by his actions, let alone what he must have felt having a real chance to qualify for the web.com tour but they are what they are and he served his time. Rather like Simon Dyson in Europe, nobody knows how they will react when back in full-time work but he seems to have shaken it all off judged on recent efforts. On his second tournament back, he came from miles behind to shoot 8-under 64 and finish second, scoring four birdies in his final four holes and whilst subsequent efforts are not quite as good with two top-12s and a trio of top-30 finishes, his last couple of events have shown he may be back to that very promising best. He probably should have won at Lushan, lying very handy before a disaster of a final round but he clearly learnt from that last weekend, thrashing his opposition by four shots with just a single bogey in his weekend of 14-under. If that is a sign of things to come, then he has to have a chance in a field that doesn't shout 'quality' apart from 20-30 players. There is also the bonus that many of the regular Challenge Tour players will feel a spot of jet-lag at some point, whilst many are fighting over a top-45 ranking with only two events to go - the selection looks sure to be playing web.com golf next season and is going to feel far more at home and far more relaxed about his status in golf. The prices have fluctutared all day - 365 went 50-1 before cutting him to 40, and then SportingBet went 66-1 for a few shekels. He is one that could be a flop or a triumph but at the prices, he stands out as something I don't want to let get away.
