Sell Scott Simpson over Peter Mitchell R1 18H MB at 1 with Sporting Index for 0.25 Pts M/U -13, Profit 3.5 Pts Mitchell won on the European Senior tour in June in Wales which was only his 2nd start in 5 years after taking a long break from competitive golf. His other start yielded an 11th place finish in the Jersey Senior Classic the previous week. He faces Simpson, who in 2 Senior Open starts has finished just inside the Top 40 on both occasions with rounds ranging from 67 to 81 depending on the severity of the test. This year is forecast to be fair but the local knowledge and experience Mitchell has suggests he should be a slight favourite here.
Sell Ian Woosnam over Mark O' Meara R1 18H MB at 1 with Sporting Index for 0.25 Pts M/U -13, Profit 3.5 Pts There is a bit of assumption here in the price that the home advantage is worth quite a lot to Woosie, certainly if this match-up was on the Champions Tour the price would be close to double figure favouritism for O'Meara. Woosnam on this tour so far has achieved two wins, a 2nd, 5th and 9th in five starts so there is an obvious pointer to a good week, but this is a far bigger event than a Senior Open for Barbados, Poland or Russia where three of those events took place. O'Meara was 2nd at Muirfield last year in this event so can play in the conditions, the weather is set to be far better this week than it was in Birkdale last week and O'Meara really does deserve to be favourite.
Sell Bernhard Langer over Mark O' Meara R1 18H MB at 5 with Sporting Index for 0.25 Pts M/U 22, Loss 4.25 Pts O'Meara's 2nd last year was just before Langer turned 50 and it would be fair to admit Langer has taken to the Seniors Tour better than O'Meara has. 10 Top 10's in 17 starts is better than O'Meara's 7 in 22 but O'Meara was only 2 shots out of making the cut last week whilst Langer was playing on the Seniors tour finishing 2nd at the 3M Championship. Langer is deserving of favouritism but maybe by 2-3pts and not 5. I would suggest though that anyone uncomfortable supporting a player in two different two balls chooses the woosnam bet in preference as it is the one with the most value.
Sell Scott Simpson over Peter Mitchell R2 18H MB at 0 with Sporting Index for 0.25 Pts M/U -16, Profit 4 Pts I walked with this match yesterday and Mitchell's putting, which had helped him to his recent successes, had deserted him a little. Simpson meanwhile just couldn't read the greens at all, I don't think he made any putts of any significant length. Both players though were driving beautifully, so based on the pre tournament beliefs that Mitchell should win more than the price implies added to the fact that he really could have won yesterday by 4 or 5 suggests a play again at 0.
