Volvo PGA Championship (1pt):
Darren Clarke to win 14/1 e.w. @
SkyBet,
BetInternet,
Victor
Chandler and
Eurobet
Twice a runner-up in this event and in the top-15 in each of the last
five years, Clarke looks to have a strong chance of finally winning this
title. He lost a lost of weight over the winter and the resulting swing
changes led to some inconsistent early season form. But back in Europe,
where he is at his best, he has finished in the top-5 in his last two
events and should at the very least match those performances.
Michael Campbell to win 40/1 e.w. @
William Hill,
Ladbrokes
and
Tote
Campbell was a selection in the first of those two events, the British
Masters, and it looked promising before the weekend. He finally settled
for a top-20 finish, as was the case in Germany last week, but should go
better this week. He also has a runners-up spot to his name in this
event (1995), plus he has finished in the top-5 in two of the last three
years. These odds look rather large for someone with that track record.
Anders Hansen to win 40/1 e.w. @
Victor
Chandler
But whereas Clarke and Campbell have three 2nd-place finishes in this
event, Hansen can boast being the winner in 2002 when he won in style,
by a margin of five strokes. Clarke and Campbell were also in the top-10
on that occasion. In 16 rounds on the West course, Hansen has been
over-par only twice so the win was no fluke. He is also in excellent
form with top-15 finishes in seven of nine starts this season and has
been particularly impressive since the Tour came to Europe. He was an
80/1 winner two years, but this price simply reflects how much
competitive he has become this season.
Final update: 2-1; +2.17pts
Clarke 4th
Campbell mc
Hansen 4th
Clarke and Hansen shared a three-way tie for 4th place to ensure a
profit on the outrights. It was a good comeback from Hansen after his
3rd round had taken him out of contention, while Clarke looked
throughout as though he could win the title, but consistently failed to
master the last hole.
