FINAL RESULT: 0-3; -3.00pts
Scott mc
Immelman 6th
Hanson wd
One good final round saw Immelman finally show his potential, but he lost any
hope by playing the par-5 17th and 18th holes so poorly in the first three
rounds. He was over-par for those six par-5s, whereas the winner, David Howell,
was five-under-par. He only needed to shoot one better score to finish in the
place money.
Outright plays (total stake per play: 1pt) Adam Scott to win 20/1 e.w.

It's hectic part of the year for Europe's leading players. They concentrate on
the PGA Tour until the Masters, play in the three-week leg of major European
Tour events in May to earn Ryder Cup points and then fly back across the
Atlantic to prepare for the U.S. Open. It is easy to avoid these players this
week as well as Ernie Els who may find that being the consultant to the changes
to the West Course will harm his chances this week. His mind will certainly be
away from his game as he seeks approval for his course refinements. So, ignoring
Goosen who has a poor record in this event in the last five years, this
represents a very good opportunity for those players who come into this event
fresh, in form and without the pressure of the Ryder Cup. That applies to Scott,
Immelman and Michael Campbell, though he is overlooked because of his
involvement in the weather-disrupted Irish Open. Scott comes into the event with
3rd place finishes in each of his last two events and in the Byron Nelson
Championship, he had held the lead after each of the first three rounds so there
is no concern over his form and there shouldn't be over his ability to win as he
won three times last year. Top-20 finishes in each of his last two visits to
Wentworth show that he can play this course well and so there is certainly value
at 20/1. Trevor Immelman to win 25/1 e.w. available generally
Immelman can claim even better form than Scott as he has finished 2nd in each of
his last two events, one via a playoff loss and then one after leading when
heading into the final round. He may yet gain his breakthrough victory on the
PGA Tour, but he has already done so on this Tour and so warrants the shorter
odds on this side of the Atlantic. It should also be remembered that he only
lost out via a playoff to Ignacio Garrido in 2003, so he is certainly due a win
and this looks a good opportunity. Peter Hanson to finish in the top-ten

With finishes of 20th and 5th in his two previous visits to Wentworth, Hanson
clearly likes the setup of the West Course and course experience is important in
this event. To add to that, he comes into the event in very good form, which is
not revealed by his finishing positions in the last month. He finished 10th in
the China Open; was in the top-10 for most of the week in the Open de Espana
before finishing 11th; and was in the top-10 for even longer in his last event,
the British Masters, where he had held the first round lead, but a final round
80 saw him plummet from 7th to 54th. With his previous history on this course,
there should be a good chance that he would hold onto any top-10 position
acquired in this event. |
