Samsung World Championship
Outright plays (1.5 units unless stated):
Annika Sorenstam to win 13/10 @ Five
Dimes [3 units]
Had a policy of making place-only wagers if the Big Three were in the field and
it was successful. But with just twenty players in the field, there are only
three places offered so there's no value there. Instead, siding with two of the
Big Three to win the title. Sorenstam is a double-winner of this event, though
not on this course, as she has tended to fade in the second half of the last two
seasons following some spectacular finishes in the first half. She has played
just as well, but this year she comes into this event having won her last three
strokeplay events. That makes 10 wins from 19 starts this year. Against a
reduced field and as dominant in the game as she has ever been, these look good
odds. Worth a punt even if the rewards are somewhat limited.
Se Ri Pak to win 7/1 @ Five
Dimes, SkyBet, William Hill, Ladbrokes
and Paddy Power
The only other player to have won an event in the last six weeks, Pak looks to
have at least as good a chance of winning this event as Webb, but at better
odds. She won in 1999 before the event came to Hiddenbrooke and, like Sorenstam,
can boast a runners-up spot on this course. Has been reported to be pick of the
players in practice this week, bar Annika, and looks a decent shot to take the
title if Sorenstam falters. Two very conservative plays, but I don't see much
else of interest with such short place terms.
Matchup plays (1.5 units):
Kelly Robbins to beat Dorothy Delasin -110 @ SkyBet
Delasin successfully defended her Giant Eagle Classic title last year, but I
can't see her repeating the feat this week. Not only is the competition more
intense, but she is simply not playing well enough. Her only top-10 finish in
the last six months came in this year's Giant Eagle Classic and she has failed
to beat Robbins in their last nine common events on American soil.
Hee-Won Han to beat Paula Marti -122 @ Five
Dimes
Wouldn't have touched this - and would even have sided with Marti, if anything -
but for a couple of edges. Marti had a poor Solheim Cup, picking up just one
point from four matches and she was heavily defeated by Laura Diaz in one of the
key early matches on the Sunday. That loss and slipping of the Cup from European
hands could have an effect on the rookie. Another edge is that she finished top
of the LPGA's Sectional Qualifying Tournament the week before the Solheim Cup.
The consequence of this is that while a good performance in this event will be
morale-boosting, the final stage of LPGA Qualifying begins next Tuesday in
Florida. That is a much more important event for Marti's career and she can be
excused if her mind wanders over the weekend.
Final update:
Matchups: 0-2-0; -3.48 units
Robbins/Delasin LOST by 10
Han/Marti LOST by 3
Outrights: 1-1; +2.40 units
Sorenstam 1st
Pak 4th
Comfortable six-shot victory for Sorenstam, but it wasn't enough to cover the
disappointing matchups. Delasin finished 10th and Marti 12th of 20 players, so
they were there to be beaten, but not by this week's selections.
