FINAL RESULT: 1-2; -2.00pts
Inkster 5th
Gulbis 20th
Pressel 16th
Three decent performances, but the best was still only a three-way
share of 5th place which did no more than return the stake.
Outright plays (total stake per play: 1pt)
Juli Inkster to win 20/1 e.w. @
BetInternet
A former winner (2002) and in her best form for several years. Inkster
opened the season with a top-10 finish in SBS Open in Hawaii, but it was
her win in the Safeway International last month - her first win since
2003 - that suggested that she was not yet ready to give way to the
rising young stars on this Tour. She has followed that win with top-5
finishes in both her subsequent events so show that the win was no
fluke. One top-5 finish was in a major championship and the other
included a course-record final round 63 in Las Vegas. It is no accident
that she ranks 2nd in the Money List and Scoring Average on Tour and
ahead of Annika Sorenstam both times, which points to value at these
odds.
Natalie Gulbis to win 28/1 e.w. @
BetInternet
Gulbis also ranks ahead of Annika Sorenstam in both the Money List (5th)
and Scoring Average (3rd) tables, which is no surprise as she has
finished in the top-5 in four of six starts this season. She failed to
reach that mark last time out in Las Vegas, but that was only because of
poor putting - she ranked 2nd in greens in regulation (85%) on the week.
So with top-15 finishes from 2002-04 and a 23rd place finish last year,
a return to the leaderboard looks very likely this week.
Morgan Pressel to win 66/1 e.w. @
Stan James
Pressel has rather disappeared from the radar after an impressive couple
of events in Hawaii in February, but that is only because she has played
just twice since. She disappointed in the Safeway International (60th),
but didn't in the Nabisco Championship where she was on the fringes of
contention throughout, ranking 4th in greens in regulation that week.
She does have course experience having competed as an amateur and
finishing 23rd and she did win the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in
such convincing style in Georgia last year. It would be hard to imagine
Michelle Wie being available at these odds and there really is little to
choose between these two at this stage of their careers. |
