Hillcrest Country Club has hosted this event since its inception in 1990. It is a Par 71, 6,800 yard birdie-fest of a course that is very resort like and where the winning score for the last three years has been no worse than -23. Based on this simple fact, Scoring Average is going to be a key stat to follow this week as is Par Breaking and any birdie based ranking. My picks are as follows:
Tom Lovelady - 0.5pts e/w @ 33/1 - The form player of the moment with four top 10s in the last two months. He has necer played Hillcrest before but the course should suit a player who ranks 1st in Total Birdies, 1st in Putting Average, 1st in Birdie Average and 30th in Scoring Average. Jonathan Byrd - 0.25pts @ 66/1 - Byrd has shared his time between the PGA and Web.com this season with a mixed set of results on both. What appeals to me though is his best finish of 5th this season coming on the PGA at the John Deere Classic which is played on a resort course similar to Hillcrest. He played here last year missing the cut but does have some hidden course form with an 11th place back in 2001. Rick Lamb - 0.25pts e/w @ 70/1 - Another player with some form on the PGA at the Deere Classic, finishing 3rd this year. He has actaully had a relatively solid year on the PGA with some respectable top 20 finishes. He has played Hillcrest twice over the last two years with no real effect but I am happy to chance him this year to small stakes. Staurt Appleby - 0.25pts e/w @ 200/1 - A bit of a flier on old Stu but it was only three starts ago that he finished 4th at the Barracuda on the PGA . He played here last year recording a very average 64th despite opening with a promising 66 so he can play the course.
