Deutsche Bank U.S. Championship

Outright plays (1 unit):

Vijay Singh to win 11/1 e.w. @ Sportingbet, Sporting Odds and Stan James
This fields looks very thin after the first half-dozen players or so and would have expected lower odds on both Singh and Furyk. They are commonly available at 9/1 apiece, so will rise to the bait with both. Vijay finished one shot out of the place finishes last week after bogeying the final par-5, but he did keep up his impressive run of finishing outside the top-20 in just one event since the Players Championship in March. Can't complain about that form and it is no surprise that he is #1 in the All-Round Ranking category on the Tour. Looks bound to be on the leaderboard on Sunday night.

Jim Furyk to win 14/1 e.w. @ Paddy Power
This price certainly stands out and will not last. This may be a long course and Furyk is certainly not a big hitter, but the TPC courses also requires good ball-striking ability and he does rank in the top-5 in greens in regulation and with a lot of attention on the par-4s this week, it is comforting that he ranks #1 in the Par-4 Performance stat. He has been just as consistent as Singh this year - they rank 1st and 2nd in top-10 finishes - and he is a player whose course management skills will overcome his lack of length off the tee this week.

Chad Campbell to win 50/1 e.w. @ Stan James
Also like Robert Allenby for this market, but will side with Campbell instead, particularly as he is best-priced 33/1 elsewhere. His 53rd place finish last week can easily be ignored following his head-to-head with Shaun Micheel in the PGA Championship the following week and he is clearly in the same form that brought him to prominence in February/March. He is also in the same vein of player as Singh and Furyk. These three are all in the top-four in the Par-4 Performance stats, they are all very high in the Greens in Regulation (Campbell ranks 3rd) and Ball Striking (Campbell ranks 2nd) stats. A large price for a player who has finished 2nd three times this year and will surely break his duck sooner rather than later.

Matchup plays (1 unit):

Billy Andrade to beat Paul Azinger -120 @ WWTS
Easy to oppose Zinger who has missed 13 of 16 cuts this year and was only in last week's no-cut event because he was in the delayed Ryder Cup team of last year. Andrade has finished ahead of him in 12 of their 14 common events in the last year and with local knowledge on his side, this should be more of the same.

Tim Herron to beat Brad Faxon -111 @ Paddy Power and SIA
Faxon is another with local knowledge, but his form is very scratchy and he is too short off the tee to make an impact on this course. Herron followed up his top-15 in the PGA Championship with a runners-up spot last week and should keep his form for a top-20 finish this week.

Robert Gamez to beat Harrison Frazar -111 @ BetandWin
Frazar gained only his second top-10 finish in the last six months at the Reno-Tahoe Open last week, but he has followed his last two top-10 finishes with missed cuts so he is hardly a consistent player. Will side with one who has become much more so over the past 12 months and leads 6-0-0 h2h over the past three months.

Nick Price to beat Jonathan Kaye -120 @ William Hill
A runners-up spot in the NEC Invitational was an impressive performance from Kaye who had missed two of his last four cuts since winning the Buick Classic in June. No such inconsistency from Price who hasn't missed a cut since the Players Championship in March and has finished in the top-5 in four of his last five PGA Tour events.

2nd round plays (1 unit unless stated):

Woods/Singh LOST by 1
Parnevik/Flesch WON by 1.5
Andrade/Rose LOST by 2.5

Final update:

Matchups: 1-2-0; -1.31 units

Andrade/Azinger LOST by 2
Herron/Faxon WON by 8
Gamez/Frazar LOST by 8
Price/Kaye VOID (Price dns)

18-holes: 1-2-0; -1.92 units

Outrights: 1-1; -0.13 units

Singh 4th
Furyk 13th
Campbell dns

Loss on the event and never looked like being anything else. Singh had led the tournament during the 2nd round, but ended the day two shots behind Adam Scott and never got any closer. Furyk recovered well after a poor opening round in the worst of the weather, but never looked like reaching the top-5. August has not been a good month ... glad to see the back of it!
