Matchup bets: (Total Stake: 2pts) Jim Furyk to beat Ernie Els +100 @ 5Dimes / BlueSq / Centrebet
This was going to be a 3pt bet when Expekt had Furyk at +114 earlier today. I waited to see if we could get better and unfortunately we have to settle for +100. But still a cracking bet as I have Furyk at -120. Els's injury problems have been well documented and his performances since returning have been littered with uncharacteristic mistakes. It's difficult to pinpoint what is exactly wrong with Els at the moment, but I am more than happy to take him on with Furyk who has everything going for him this week. His recent previous form is near identical to Els, but he has the advantage of knowing his game is in fine form. Also the small greens plays into Furyk's hands where he thrives on courses like this (excellent GIR stats and 4th for this field for proximity to hole) while Els is struggling on the GIR front. Not much in the h2h's (Furyk dominates the recent h2h's) but the other important factor is the Bermuda greens. Outside of Hawaii, Els has a very poor record on greens of this type regularly struggling to get into the top 25. Furyk has to be the logical choice at the odds. Fred Funk to beat Peter Lonard -110 @ BetInternet It will always be one of those "How?????" moments in sport to rival ex-Ayr United Steve Nicol's miss in the 1986 World Cup against Uruguay. Peter Lonard won this event last year!!! And rather sacrily his credentials are very similar to last year. Current form is poor; course form (apart from last years win) is poor; stats (GIR and proximity to hole) are very poor. There is nothing to suggest that he will come close to repeating last years performance. Funk on the otherhand has shown a good deal of consistency this season (I can forgive him last weeks missed cut which considering the course was pretty much inevitable), has had consistently good finishes at this event (32-62-27-6-18) and will clearly be more suited by this course which relies on accuracy rather than length.
Matchup bets: (Total Stake: 1.5pts) Brian Davis to beat Rocco Mediate +110 @ SportingOdds If anyone is going to struggle to overcome last weekend it surely has to be Rocco. He was puting in his first promising event of the year when... well that hole happened. And from being in the frame to win the Masters he moved down the leaderboard by 25 places. His record this year is poor, his recent record in this event is poor and psychologically he can't be in the best frame of mind. Davis has recently finished 20th in the Players, followed by 10th in the Portuguese Open and finished 25th here last year. +110 would be a fair price normally, but considering Davis's recent return to form and Roccos potentially fragile state of mind, these odds look good, but at reduced stakes.
