Spread Betting News (Sporting Index)

Summary: 9 bets, 2 wins, 7 losses, P&L -34.62 Pts. Gave all of last weeks profits back this week. Always struggling after losing only one player at the cut.

Tournament Trades.

(Note: Sporting Index are giving clients a free £5 bet on an FP quote if they place 4 other bets of at least £5 stakes. With the scoring system risks being negated this week by a cut line at 44, there is really little difference in the risks involved. With ties, and the possibility that a tight leaderboard will see many more qualifying due to the “10 shot rule” it is probably value to get with Sporting when prices are similar. **Use Ames as the “free bet”.

Buy Darren Clarke FP at 30 with Sporting Index for 0.6 Pts M/U 24, Loss 3.6 Pts

17th last year was Clarke’s best finish since 1998 in this event, having missed two cuts in that time. Recently Clarke has finished 20th at Sawgrass and 3rd at Bay Hill. His form though is reflected in this quote.

Buy Jose Maria Olazabal FP at 26 with Sporting Index for 0.6 Pts M/U 5, Loss 12.6 Pts

Olazabal is a big fancy this week having won here twice, and finishing 2nd yesterday at Sugarloaf. However, this price is far too low and has to be traded on value purposes alone. Bar his two wins, Olly has 7 top 20’s in the last 10 years but has failed to beat 30th in the last two years which has coincided with the course getting lengthened.

Buy Mike Weir FP at 29 with Sporting Index for 0.6 Pts M/U 12, Loss 10.2 Pts

Weir is another player who seems to excel here but when you go past the results you remember, the win and the 5th last year, his best previous finish is 24th in 4 other visits. A R4 79 in his last round at Sawgrass shows that he can throw in the occasional big number, with a 78 in the AT&T another example. I would pitch Weir in this company at 32 even allowing for the reduced field.

Buy K. J. Choi FP at 32 with Sporting Index for 0.6 Pts M/U 48, Profit 9.6 Pts

Only three visits here from Choi and with a 33rd place last year his worst score it would suggest that Choi will be a popular choice this week. This once again has been reflected in the quotes. His form going into the event is only average, with a top 20 at Sawgrass which was his only Top 20 since the tour was in Hawaii

Buy Stephen Ames FP at 35 with Sporting Index for 0.6 Pts** M/U 12

If the Ames who won the TPC turns up then he has to challenge this week, such was the brilliance of his performance. However, a 45th here last year suggests that we should trade the price in the knowledge that part if not all of our stake is not at risk due to the offer from Sporting Index.

Buy Rod Pampling FP at 35 with Spreadex for 0.6 Pts M/U 17, Loss 10.8 Pts
A 5th in his only Masters so far and a winner within the last month means Pampling is priced at 35 but with such a quality field, 35 is value, as he did miss the cut at Sawgrass.

Buy Zach Johnson FP at 33 with IG Sport for 0.6 Pts M/U 33.5 Profit 0.3 Pts
Unlike Pampling, Johnson has a poor return from his one attempt at Augusta. A R1 81 gave Johnson no chance last year of making the weekend. In good form of course with a T2 with Olazabal in the Bellsouth but there are players quoted higher who probably have a better chance this week on known form and stats.

Round One Trades

Sell Nick O’Hern over Tim Herron 18H MB at 2.6 with Cantor Spreadfair for 0.3 Pts. M/U 25, Loss 6.72 Pts

Herron finished 11th last year which was easily his best performance to date on this course. O’Hern finished 45th in the same event and may be over-estimated in this match-up at the price offered. I would have them as a “choice” bet so getting 2.6pts start makes this bet worth playing. Both players are out of form with O’Hern missing his last 5 cuts and Herron only making one of his.

Sell Tiger Woods over Robert Allenby 18H MB at 11 with  Sporting Index for 0.3 Pts M/U 13, Loss 0.6 Pts

Woods’ recent form reads 20th and 22nd which shows that he is not totally at the top of his game right now. Obviously he should contend here but at the price there is a touch of value in getting with Allenby. Head to head matches this year has Allenby 2-1 in front in both event and R1 scoring and the average M/U in 18H Spread matches is –8. Even going back to the start of 05, Woods only leads 12-5 which isn’t a sufficient lead on a player who is priced at 11-14
