Spread Betting News (Sporting Index)

Bets - 5, Wins - 3, Profit - 4Pts

Update:

Sporting Index have changed their rules on Finishing positions. From this week, the maximum 50 ceiling has been replaced by a new system. The other three firms have decided they will keep the old system so we now have two options when considering bets, although the Sporting Index option is more volatile than the old system. The new rule is as follows:

For bets on finishing positions, the position of a player who misses the cut will be deemed the number of players who make the first official cut in tournament + 1, unless stated otherwise. If a player tees off but subsequently misses the cut, withdraws or is disqualified, his finishing position will make up at the number of players who make the first official cut in tournament + 1. Part-played rounds do not count.

This means that bets on players who miss the cut will now have a variable M/U but it will usually be between 70 and 80, although occasionally higher. It also means that a player who makes the cut but has a poor weekend can M/U at anything up to the no. of the players left in the event rather than a number of players finishing at 50. All of this will be taken into account when we advise Finishing Position bets this season.

Pre Round One Trades

Buy Stuart Appleby FP at 27 with Sporting Index / Bet HiLo for 0.5 Pts M/U 8, Loss 9.5 Pts
Apples won last week but this is a different layout and in the one time he played here after a Kapalua win, he missed the cut. His previous Sony record was ok without being impressive and his form after the Mercedes last year was pretty average. All in all it's a good price

Buy Jim Furyk FP at 21 with Sporting Index / Bet HiLo for 0.5 Pts M/U 8, Loss 6.5 Pts
Furyk at 21 with the added opportunity to make more than what would have been a maximum of 29 pts, is also value at 21 under the new scoring system. His average over 7 previous visits is a full 10pts more.

Buy Bart Bryant FP at 30 with IG Sport for 0.5 Pts M/U 50, Profit 10 Pts
This is one of these scenario's where the player should really have a good week and everything points to this happening, but the spread price is just a bit of value to oppose him with. Not the best Sony record but then supporters will correctly point to the fact that the Bart Bryant of 2002-2004 here is a much poorer player than the one who tees off this week. 39th 60th and 30th in those years he showed the potential of a big 2005 when finishing 9th last year. At anything higher he is certainly not value and is definitely not at Sportings' 37 on the new system.

Summary: Appleby T33, Furyk T6, Bryant T88. A bit unlucky that our worst placed player is the one on the old style scoring system but there is a long way to go yet.

R2 Summary: Bryant leaves the event but the other two are playing very well. Possibly a bit of value will appear in R3 pricing and give us an opportunity to improve our situation.

Pre Round Three Trades

Buy Charles Howell FP at 40 with IG Sport for 0.5 Pts M/U 50, Profit 5 Pts

Buy Shigeki Maruyama at 40 with Spreadex for 0.5 Pts M/U 50, Profit 5 Pts

In both cases these players are currently Tied 66th with 16 other players and are 3 shots off of a whole clump of players at their current price level. Although there is limited profit compared to a potentially large deficit the average finish they should achieve from here is higher than the 40 you can trade at. With 82 players making the weekend they have 42 to beat to beat their quote. Currently they lead none of them.

R3 Summary: At the current quotes we can get out of the week roughly even so it all depends on how the remaining four players play today as to whether we make a profit or not.

Final Summary: Considering we were up against it the whole week with Appleby and Furyk, to come out 4pts up is acceptable.
