FINAL RESULT: 0-3; -3.00pts
Harrington 13th
Toms 20th
Slocum mc
Had a decent chance of at least one place payout throughout the week, but
both players found water off the tee at the 7th hole in the final round and that
ended both their chances. It was particularly damaging for Harrington who
dropped five shots in three holes at the time and would finish those same five
shots out of the playoff.

It's difficult to find angles to back/oppose players when they compete for the
first time on a new course (this is the case this week, apart from the 1987 PGA
Championship), so here's one: they have all won on Jack Nicklaus-designed
courses (there are four used regularly on the PGA Tour; two on the European
Tour). In Pod's case, it was the 2004 German Masters around Gut Larchenhof where
he has two other top-3 finishes as well. That course doesn't share the amount of
water around the Nicklaus-redesigned Champions Course at PGA National Resort,
but Jack always places a great emphasis on strategy around his courses and the
importance of the 'second shot' over any other. Add in Harrington's recent good
form, his victory in this event two years ago and his early exit from the
draining matchplay event last week, and 16/1 looks a fair price even without the
addition of an extra position on the place terms.

For Toms, his Nicklaus-course victory was the 1999 Sprint International around
Castle Pines, but he can count good finishes around other Nicklaus courses on
the PGA Tour: he has finishes of 2nd and 7th in the two visits he made to
Montreux and he finished 8th at Muirfield Village last time out. And, like
Harrington, he can combine some good recent form with a pre-weekend exit last
week and a very impressive record in Florida: he has finished in the top-6 in
five out of his last eight Tour starts in this State, including the last two
Honda Classics. This course will also suit him far more than Mirasol.

Slocum has been quietly very impressive this season, so much so that he is ranks
3rd in Scoring Average (Actual) on the Tour! He finished 20th in the Sony Open,
4th in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, 6th in the FBR Open and was 15th after the
opening round of the Nissan Open until a 74 in the difficult morning conditions
on the Friday (there was one-and-a-half shot difference between the morning and
afternoon groups over those first two days) saw him finish the round outside the
top-20 for the first time in 2007 (after 14 consecutive rounds). He only made
the cut on the mark as a result so that event can largely be dismissed. And,
while his form in Florida doesn't match that of the other selections, he can
count a win on a Nicklaus-designed course: the 2005 Southern Farm Bureau
Classic. He is a player who thrives on these types of 'strategy over power'
courses and has shown enough form recently to suggest that he should certainly
contend this week. There is 80/1 on offer, but the extra sixth place might prove
helpful.
