6-8; -3.24pts Disappointing result after all five Sunday matches had been leading midway through the final round
Round 1 plays (1pt)
Fredrik Jacobson to beat Daisuke Maruyama -145 @ Pinnacle LOST by 2 Jacobson can play these courses well - he was 3rd after 36 holes on his previous visit; Maruyama missed the cut on his only previous visit - but the difference between these two players is shown by their head-to-head records: 11-4-1 over the last 12 months and in the first round alone it is 10-3-3
Jason Day to beat Greg Norman -135 @ The Greek WON by 7 Norman may have played well in the South African Open in December, but that is his only Tour start in the last 12 months. And the last time he started a PGA Tour event was back in 2006 - he missed the cut as he has done in his last six PGA Tour starts. The last time he broke 70 on this Tour was in August 2003 ... how can he be a match for such a great prospect as Day?
Round 2 plays (1pt)
Alejandro Canizares to beat Joe Ogilvie -115 @ Five Dimes LOST by 4 Backing the better player and who was much better from tee-to-green than his opponent yesterday. Around the much tougher Spyglass Hill course, that difference should be accentuated today
Kevin Sutherland to beat Pat Perez -115 @ Five Dimes LOST by 8 Sutherland was surprisingly poor yesterday, but he was still far better from tee-to-green than Perez who only hit 9/18 greens in regulation around the easiest course. As with the previous play, such differences should be magnified today and there is still time for Sutherland to get back into this tournament
Garrett Willis to beat Dicky Pride -110 @ Five Dimes LOST by 6 I don't think is still time for Pride to get back into this tournament - he is 2nd-last - and doesn't have a good record of 'bouncing back' when quite so far off the cut mark
Padraig Harrington to beat Mike Weir -107 @ Pinnacle LOST by 1 There is no bigger hypochondriac in professional golf was Pod ... he seems to revel in adversity. He was well enough to hit 14/18 very small greens around Pebble Beach yesterday and his game appears in far better shape than Weir's
James Driscoll to beat Brett Rumford +100 @ Five Dimes WON by 6 Rumford has been at least 10 shots off the pace after 18 holes twice this year and has shot 73-75 in the 2nd round. He's a player who will miss a lot of cuts and I can't see a bounce-back taking place today
Round 3 plays (1pt):
Kyle Thompson to beat John Daly -133 @ Five Dimes LOST by 1 Opposing Daly who is hardly renowned for trying his best when out of contention. For parallels with this situation, in three of the last five times that he has been at least 15 shots off the lead after 36 holes, he has shot 80 or higher in the 3rd round
Alex Cejka to beat Kent Jones +110 @ William Hill WON by 1 Jones has missed the cut in all three starts this year and in each of the last two years here, so I can only see him struggling again after being the sole leader after 18 holes
Brian Davis to beat Frank Lickliter +103 @ Five Dimes WON by 2 His fifth straight week of Tour golf which also includes a flight from Hawaii to Florida to be with his new-born twins, Lickliter must surely be running out of gas by now. And after failing to make the cut in this event of any of the last four years, maybe he should have taken a break this week. He should at least have Sunday to rest
Round 4 plays (1pt):
Jay Williamson to beat Jonathan Kaye +105 @ The Greek WON by 3 Robert Damron to beat Jonathan Kaye +115 @ Pinnacle WON by 3 Opposing Kaye who makes his first cut of the year this week. He had missed the whole of 2007 through injury and when fit in 2006 had only managed to finish in the top-10 once. That equates to extreme contention rustiness, something that Williamson certainly does not have and makes Damron backable at plus odds
Andrew Buckle to beat Chris Riley -105 @ Five Dimes TIED More a play against Riley who ranks 141st in 4th round scoring over the past 12 months and is incomparable to the player that made the 2004 Ryder Cup
Jeff Quinney to beat Dustin Johnson +102 @ Pinnacle LOST by 1 Fredrik Jacobson to beat Dustin Johnson -132 @ Five Dimes LOST by 2 It's been an impressive opening five events from the Tour rookie, but playing in the final group on Sunday is a new experience for Johnson on the PGA Tour and paired with someone like Vijay Singh should make the experience all the more daunting
