Buy Tim Herron FP at 44 with Sporting Index for 0.5 Pts M/U 24.5, Loss 9.75 Pts 31st here in it's inaugural year in 2007, Herron in 2008 has been pretty poor, with 34th the best finish in 4 starts. It's very easy when there is a better event elsewhere and therefore a sub standard field to assume that the best known players will almost certainly compete but there isn't that great a difference in ability when you get to this level of player and it takes a good week, especially with the putter, to contend on any PGA tour event. Herron has got to improve a great deal on what he has shown so far and the price offered is therefore maybe a bit low.
Buy Cameron Beckman FP at 44 with Sporting Index for 0.5 Pts M/U 44.5, Profit 0.25 Pts Beckman played here last year finishing 7th hence the low quote as his 2008 form has been worse than Herron's. Finishes of 32, cut, cut, 54, 62 in 5 starts beating 70 only 5 times in 18 starts on generally easy courses as they tend to be at this time of year is not too impressive and there are enough players in far better form than Beckman to suggest we are on the right side of this quote.
Buy Briny Baird FP at 44 for 0.5 Pts (freely available) M/U 15, Loss 14.5 Pts Similarly, Baird has little to no form this year and was well down the field in 63rd in the event last year. 13th in the desert in Phoenix is the only start in five this year that Baird has beaten his quote this week and accepting the lower quality field it is a fair price to oppose at.
Buy Jose Coceres over Greg Norman R1 18H MB at 1.5 withSporting Index for 0.25 Pts M/U 19, Profit 4.37 Pts Only standout bet on R1 is this match between Coceres, who was 2nd last year, against the part timer Norman, who plays rarely and who shot a 76 and 79 on the way to missing the cut at Pebble. Coceres makes his 08' bow this week but shot no worse than 69 in 4 rounds here last year and should have too much for the Australian.
R2
Buy John Merrick FP at 20 with Sporting Index for 0.5 Pts M/U 3.5 Loss 8.25 Pts Merrick leads the event on -6 but we have a leaderboard where only 6 strokes separate Merrick from the players in 59th place. Had he been in good form coming into the event or had shown a liking for the course last year then it may be a price to avoid but two cuts in a row and 48th place a year ago means that we can trade this on the belief that this may have just been one excellent round that may not be followed up with at least a couple more, which he will need to stay in the Top 20.
Buy Peter Lonard FP at 25 with Sporting Index for 0.5 Pts M/U 7.5 Loss 8.75 Pts Lonard is priced fairly low as he is one of the better players in the field, but form this year is poor with one weekend made in four. His score of -2 was not too impressive in relatino to the field as it only got him just inside the Top 20 with 10 others on the same score. He has a late tee time today so if the weather is ok he will possibly have to better Thursday's score to go in the right direction and there are enough question marks on his current form to suggest that 25 is a price based on repuation alone.
