4-2 +6 Pts
Stake 4.05 pts Rory Sabbatini -135 over Joe Affrunti (5dimes) WON Rookie against 10+ yr tour member and amultiple winner. Affrunti made his debut at the Sony, missing the MDF cut due to weather. He bounced back with a 66 after opening with a 73 but Sabbatini still beat him by 4 strokes at the halfway mark. The South course is very difficult, especially for a rookie. Rory has some nice finishes at this even including a 3rd in 2008. Side with experience here, not too much juice either. Stake 3pts Gary Woodland +130 over Jhonattan Vegas (wsex,pinnacle,5dimes) LOSS A few reason for this play. Although Woodland lost in the playoff he played much better than Vegas in the final round, countless 6 footers just missed as he took 30 putts that final round. Vegas is still a raw player and a course like Torrey can eat him up, especially if he suffers a hangover from his win. Woodland has seen this course and knows life on the PGA Tour. I really like this play as I fully expect Vegas to struggle after a draining victory.
Stake 3.15 pts Phil Mickelson -105 over Dustin Johnson (Pinnacle) WON Johnson may be distracted with his name in the tabloids regarding his relationship with Natalie Gulbis. He finshed 9th at Kapalua but pulled out of the Sony due to personal reasons. Mickelson shook the rust off his game last week at Abu Dhabi and is playing a home game just outside of San Diego. Phil has the advantage of course form, three times a winner here. Johnson has the length to do well here but has been average in his attempts. Phil should prove too strong this week. Stake 2.4 pts Nathan Green -120 over Peter Tomasulo (5dimes) WON Tomasulo's second attempt on the PGA Tour. In 2009 he made just 5 cuts while missing 20. He is a California native but his only start here was a missed cut. Meanwhile Green has been a consistent figure on tour for 5 years and lost in a Playoff here in 2006, he also boasts a t11 in 2008. He missed his first two cuts of the year, albeit by just a few shots. Look for him to play well this week on a venue he knows well Stake 2pts Steve Marino +100 over Charley Hoffman (thegreek) WON Marino already has a runner up finish this year at the Sony and holds a 31-20 advantage over Hoffman the past three seasons yet is the dog...Maybe because Hoffman is from the area. Thats not enough for me as Hoffman has started poorly this season finishing very low at Kapalua and struggling to go low at the Hope where he usually plays great. He has decent starts at Torrey Pines but in just four seasons so does Marino. Will gladly take even money on the player with better current form Stake 1 pt Brandt Jobe +115 over Spencer Levin (5dimes) LOSS Opposed Levin last week with a veteran and cashed it. Although Jobe is not the caliber of J Leonard he does have a slew og top 15's at this event before his injury. He made his first two cuts and if this is the return of Jobe I suspect he has a nice start this week
