7pts Webb Simpson to beat Phil Mickelson evens (Betfair Fixed Odds) tie no bet I'll make no claims for originality here and I fully concur with Steve Palmer's analysis in the Racing Post today. A look at Mickelson's post US Open performances down the years provides strong evidence that he's well worth taking on. Over the last ten years Mickelson has adopted a routine whereby he plays the US Open, takes the rest of June off and then plays 1 (occassionally 2) warm-up events in preparation for the Open Championship. His immediate results post US Open hardly inspire confidence: 2003: 30th (Western Open), 2004: MC (Scottish Open), 2005: 44th (Scottish Open), 2006: 65th (Western Open), 2007: MC (AT&T National), 2008: 38th (Scottish Open), 2010: MC (Scottish Open), 2011: 58th Scottish Open, 2012: MC (Greenbrier Classic). Simpson, in contrast, tends to play some of his best golf at this time of year and with 2 top-10 finishes in the Greenbrier in his last 2 appearances he has the look of an excellent wager as the even money outsider. |
