Good day all. My name is Woz and I hope to be able to give you some winning tips on the 72 hole matchups on the PGA Tour in 2014. Farmers Insurance Open 2014 CHARLES HOWELL III to beat CHARLEY HOFFMAN : 6pts win at 5/6 (Victor Chandler) They boast the same Christian name, they even have the same initials as well. But by Sunday night I hope the man with the surname Howell III will be at least a shot or 3 lower than the Hoffmann. There are a few factors that lead me to think this could be a successful trade: - Howell has pretty much started last season the way he finished in 2013, in good form, scrambling well, and decent finishes too, with several Top 10 finishes to show for it. Confidence is Howell's 15th club in the bag, more to him than most of the other golfers on Tour. Hoffman has had a steady, but fairly unspectacular start to 2014.
- He has a very strong track record playing in California with Top 10 finishes nearly 20% of the time in 16 attempts.
- Torrey Pines is a track Howell has played well on too, with 2 Top 10 finishes (9th both times) in the past 4 years. It is clearly a track he prefers to play over Hoffman, who mustered a T34th last year, with missed cuts for 2 of the 3 previous tourneys.
- The three main stats I like to take from tournaments at Torrey Pines are GIR, GIR %ge from other than fairway and Scrambling. Howell stats rack up really well compared to Hoffman's last season. GIR 66.73% (42nd) Vs 65.48% (85th). GIR from other than fairway 58.35% (3rd) Vs 53.28% (42nd) and Scrambling 64.83% (5th) Vs 53.83% (154th).
It remains to be seen whether CH III can start to convert some of these decent finishes into more wins than the two he already has to his name on the PGA Tour. However, I feel confident he can get us all off to a winning start in this match against Hoffmann. Good luck! Woz |
