Lightpath Long Island Classic
Outright plays (2 units):
Bruce Fleisher to win 11/1 e.w. @ Five Dimes
(1 unit to win & 1 unit to finish in top-5)
Short price, but hard to discount a player who won this title on his first two
attempts and finished a close 7th last year. He hasn't won since lifting the
U.S. Senior Open title last year, so will take the safe each-way play. With four
top-5 finishes in the last two months, he should at least achieve that target on
this course. Jim Thorpe to win 25/1
e.w. @ Five Dimes
Wouldn't have touched him but for this price. His putted "exploded in
his hands" last week when he had a 5-foot putt for victory (as a 33/1
selection) and missed the return to enter the playoff. But Thorpe is a
resilient player who keeps playing week after week and is obviously in
very good form. As mentioned last week, if he has a good first round, he
will surely challenge. If not, he'll coast over the weekend.
Bobby Wadkins to win 28/1 e.w. @ Five Dimes
Opposed him last year on his Senior debut and paid the price as he won
the tournament. It was only after the event that I heard him say he has
grown up on the Meadow Brook course. With that local knowledge and
rested last week after having been in very form all season, I'll take
the defending champion at these odds.
Final update: 1-2; -2.25 units Fleisher 5th
Thorpe 34th
Wadkins 15th Hit the safety play on Fleisher to finish in
the top-5, but the other two never really challenged. Fleisher had a
poor opening nine holes today so victory and a profitable event was
never on the cards.
