Long Island Classic
Outright plays (2 units):
Allen Doyle to win 12/1 e.w. @ Bet365
and
Stan James
After six top-10 finishes in his previous eight events, Doyle won the
FleetBoston Classic two weeks ago. It was his first win for two years.
In that form and against a weaker-than-usual field, he can certainly win
again. Had they remained at Meadow Brook, he would definitely fancy his
chances - he had finished in the top-3 on all four previous visits - but
he should still relish this event even though it has moved to the Red
Course at Eisenhower Park.
Des Smyth to win 20/1 e.w. @
William Hill
Smyth should not be disadvantaged from the move to a new course as he
had been too young to play when they teed off at Meadow Brook last year.
He comes into this event in consistent form with nine top-20 finishes in
his last eleven starts and he did close with a 66 on Sunday to finish
7th in the 3M Championship. More generally available at 12/1, he will
surely win a title very soon.
Tom Jenkins to win 28/1 e.w. @
Stan James
and
Paddy Power
Jenkins has already done so this year - Bruno's Memorial Classic - and
he is every bit as consistent. With ten top-10 finishes on Tour this
season, he ranks 2nd behind Doyle in that category. He has yet to earn
even a place return as a selection in the last two weeks, but these odds
look too big for this quality of player.
Matchup plays (2 units unless stated):
Allen Doyle to beat Dana Quigley -130 @ Five
Dimes
Quigley may have won this event in 1997, but only finished ahead of
Doyle once on the previous course. He has failed to do so recently and
trails 2-7-0 h2h in the last three months, so Doyle is a deserved
favourite here.
Tom Jenkins to beat Bob Gilder -115 @ Five
Dimes
Gilder should welcome the change in venue for this event as he had
struggled on his two previous visits to Meadow Brook and finished well
behind Jenkins both times. He also trails 2-6-1 in the last three
months, so it doesn't look good for him in this match.
John Harris to beat Gary Koch -127 @ Five
Dimes [4 units]
Also siding with a player in this match who has a clear head-to-head
lead. Harris leads 3-1-1 h2h over the past three months and 4-2-1 h2h
overall on this Tour against Koch. Much more as expected from Koch and
it appears that Harris is the one with the greater desire to win this
match.
Ed Fiori to beat Seiji Ebihara -103 @ Five
Dimes [6 units]
Ebihara has been just as disappointing on this Tour after being so
impressive in Europe. Will continue to oppose him and this week with
Fiori who was 6th in FleetBoston Classic two weeks ago and has a 5-1-0
h2h career record against the Japanese player on this Tour.
Final update:
Matchups: 2-2-0; +5.10 units
Doyle/Quigley LOST by 3
Jenkins/Gilder LOST by 7
Harris/Koch WON by 1
Fiori/Ebihara WON by 2
Outrights: 1-2; +0.00 units
Doyle 37th
Smyth 3rd
Jenkins 9th
Thankful to two very tight matchup wins for the profit
on this event. Smyth did finish four shots behind the winner, but never
really threatened in the final round, while Jenkins never broke par
until that round. A lucky profit on the event!
