Turtle Bay Championship
Outright plays (2 units):
D.A. Weibring to win 12/1 e.w. @
William Hill
The youngster has quickly established himself as one of the leading
players on the Tour this year with a win and top-10 finishes in his last
eight Senior events. He even made the cut in a PGA Tour event, the John
Deere Classic, where he was 12th after 36 holes. Not quite in the same
league as Craig Stadler and the B.C. Open, but still very impressive. No
course form, but that has been a problem all year and he has still been
very competitive. Will bite at double-digit odds.
Tom Jenkins to win 33/1 e.w. @
Stan James
Stan James continue to underestimate Jenkins. This is not normally a
price reserved for a player who has won once this year already and
finished 4th in his last two starts. His course form is not particularly
impressive, but this is still a large price for such a competitive
player.
Rodger Davis to win 40/1 e.w. @
Stan James
Davis is another who has already won this year (Toshiba Senior Classic)
and has a good number of top-10 finishes as well. He hasn't played since
the Tradition five weeks ago, but he is well-established as a good wind
player (which he needed to be to win the Toshiba event) and should be
looking to improve on his 11th place finish from last year when he had
been on contention throughout the event.
Matchup plays (2 units unless stated):
Hugh Baiocchi to beat Jay Overton -135 @ Five
Dimes [4 units]
Big difference in form between these two. Baiocchi has two top-10
finishes in his last five starts, while Overton's best finish since
February (15 starts) has been 20th in the Bayer Advantage Classic in
May. No surprise that Baiocchi dominates the head-to-head stats for this
match.
John Bland to beat Ed Fiori -115 @ Five
Dimes
The head-to-head stats are much more evenly balanced in this match, but
course experience is deemed to be decisive here. While Fiori will be
making his debut on this course this week, Bland finished 3rd last year
and that is a sizeable advantage over his opponent.
Tom Purtzer to beat Don Pooley -125 @ Five
Dimes
Similar story here with the head-to-head stats, but still siding with
Purtzer who is the better player. Pooley doesn't rank in the top-10 in
any of the Champions Tour's 28 stat categories, with the figure for
Purtzer is ten, while also being top-ranked in driving distance and
greens in regulation, a very useful combination.

Outrights: 0-3; -6.00 units
Weibring 6th
Jenkins 47th
Davis 5th
Profitable event, but a sickener on the outrights. Neither looked
like winning, but both looked as though they should have gained a place
win. Davis had been 3rd but failed to birdie the par-5 18th hole which
was playing the second-easiest hole. It dropped him to the final place
spot in 4th until Summerhays recorded only the 2nd eagle of the week on
that hole to leapfrog over him and push him out of the places. Weibring
finished two shots out of the places after failing to birdie either the
easiest or the second-easiest holes of the week on the final nine.
Another profitable Champions Tour event, but another frustration in the
outrights market.
