Senior PGA Championship (2pts):
Tom Watson to win 12/1 e.w. @
Bet365
and
Paddy Power
Watson's two best performance in the last nine years of the PGA
Championship have come on this course. In 1996, he finished only five
shots outside the playoff between Mark Brooks and Kenny Perry and in
2000 he finished in the top-10 when there was another playoff, this time
between Tiger Woods and Bob May. No-one else in this field can match
that form on this course and with him returning to form with a 3rd place
finish last week, he looks to have as much of a chance of winning this
event as red-hot favourite, Jay Haas. It would also be a fitting tribute
to the memory of Bruce Edwards.
Tom Kite to win 25/1 e.w. @
William Hill
and
Ladbrokes
Kite finished 19th at Valhalla in 2000, which is far more encouraging
that the 64th place finishes of Haas and Stadler. Like Watson, he is
coming back into form with two top-5 finishes in his last three starts
and really should be no more than 20/1 given the other prices.
Larry Nelson to win 33/1 e.w. @
Paddy Power
and
BlueSq
Not quite so impressive for Nelson at Valhalla. He did make the cut in
1996, but withdrew before the 3rd round, and he did not play in 2000.
However, on the basis of current form, he should not be at these odds.
He has finished in the top-6 in six of his last eight starts and won his
last event, Kinko's Classic, three weeks ago. Available at half these
odds, he is certainly value at 33/1.
Final update: 1-2; -3.33pts
Watson 4th
Kite 21st
Nelson 57th
Watson did birdie the first two holes of final round to get within a
shot of eventual winner, Hale Irwin, but it was more typical of the week
that he took SEVEN on the last hole to finish in a three-way tie for 4th
place. It meant that five of twelve outright selections had finished in
the top-5, but everyone had been a reduced payout because of ties.
