Outright plays (2pts):
Larry Nelson to win 16/1 e.w. @
William Hill
Was never going to get the 33/1 of last week, but for a player who has
finished 4th, 2nd and 2nd in his last three starts, these odds seem
fair. Having also been in contention in
recent years on this course - 5th, 7th, 15th and 2nd in the last four
years - this looks another week in which Nelson will continue his run of
good form. He needs to convert more of these
chances to win, but so long as he keeps getting himself into contention
there is hope.
Tom Purtzer to win 25/1 e.w. @
Stan James
Purtzer also put in a good performance last week in finishing 6th - his
third top-6 finish in five starts this year - and looked to be finishing
even higher during the final round. His
course form is not too impressive, but his last four rounds here have
been in the 60s and he is a player who is more than capable of winning
in this company.
Graham Marsh to finish in the top-four 10/1 @
Centrebet
Marsh's course form is also rather unimpressive, though he can boast a
top-5 finish in the weather-shortened 2000 event. He
returns to the selection fold on the back of his impressive 4th place
finish last week. After surrendering the title so weakly to Ed Fiori two
weeks ago, he would have been excused a hangover last week, but it was
not the case as he improved in every round to mount a late challenge. In
this form, he should be at shorter odds to secure one of the top-4
places again.
Final update: 1-2; +27.25pts
Nelson 36th
Purtzer 1st
Marsh 36th
After Purtzer had opened with a 60
in the first round, this should have been a lot easier than it was. He
did eventually lose the lead on the front nine on Sunday, but regained
it a few holes later and hung on for a one-shot win. He did it the hard
way, but it meant a third successive very profitable week of selections
on this Tour. March and the Seniors have certainly rescued this
previously-troubled season!
