Bank of America Championship
FINAL RESULT: 2-1; +4.25pts
Weibring 4th
Purtzer 2nd
Smyth 7th Disappointing return from three selections on the
leaderboard. Weibring had a settle for a three-way share of 4th place,
while Smyth's 2nd round 73 let him down badly. He finished one shot out
of the places. But Purtzer did make it to the playoff and had a good
chance to win it on the first hole, but failed. Then, after a lengthy
weather break, they returned and McNulty holed from 30-feet to deny him
victory. A profitable event, but was hoping for a lot more on Sunday.

Siding with two players with particularly good course form over the last
two years. Weibring has been backed twice in the last four tournaments
and he has finished 1st in the Bruno's Memorial Classic and 6th in the
Bayer Advantage Classic on those occasions. And he really should have
earned a place return in the latter event, but for a late falter in the
weather-shortened event. This was the scene of his first top-10 on this
Tour in 2003 when he finished 4th and he returned last year to finish
2nd courtesy of a final round 65. On that basis, he really should
contend again this year.
Tom Purtzer to win 25/1 e.w. @

Not such consistent form from Purtzer this year, though highlights have
included a top-3 finish in the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf and a 21st
place finish in The Colonial on the PGA Tour, but he had been in similar
form last year and he ended the first and second rounds as leader. It
took a final round 64 from Craig Stadler to push him into 2nd place on
that occasion, but having finished 4th the previous year as well, this
venue could easily see his best finish of the year to date.
Des Smyth to win 25/1 e.w. @

An underrated player, if these are anything to go by. He ranks 4th in
the Money Leaders category this year, yet has played considerably less
than the three players above him. In just nine starts on this Tour in
2005, he was won twice. So having finished in the top-10 last year when
in poor form - he had not recorded a top-10 finish for six previous
events and for another eight events after this one - he really should
finish higher now that he has firmly established himself as one of the
leading players on this Tour. |
