FINAL RESULT: 0-2; -4.00pts
McNulty 10th
Weibring dns
Bryant 26th
McNulty was in 1st place after the first round; he was in first place
after the second round, but couldn't even finish in the places to earn a
small return on these plays. Just sums up the current run. Three weeks
ago I was disbelieving my luck when Scott Verplank turned in a 2nd place
finish from nowhere and I stood +37pts from 39 plays on the 2006 season.
I reckon I've more than paid back my share of good luck that week as I'm
now down 50pts on the last three weeks with player after player throwing
away golden chances to win and scarcely even earn a place return. Pretty
hard to take.

McNulty is the player to back in pro-ams. Not only does he have a record
of finishing 1st and then 2nd in this event, but he is a former winner
of the Dimension Data Pro-Am in his home country and finished in the
top-15 in the Dunhill Links Championship in his last two years on the
European Tour before reaching the Seniors age. And having bounced back
to form with a pair of 67s over the weekend after a slow start to the
season, he looks set for yet another very high finish around of the TPC
of Tampa Bay. D.A. Weibring to win 28/1 e.w. @

Weibring was backed last week, but pulled out after a first round 73,
citing a sore shoulder so this is a gamble on his fitness. The
compensating factor is that his odds have increased from 22/1 to 28/1
this week even though his course form (9th and 5th) is considerably
better this week than last. If fit, he should be good enough to repeat
his top-3 finish in his other start this year and maybe this will be the
week that Loren Roberts slips up. Brad Bryant to win 33/1 e.w.

Bryant has played in only one pro-am event on this Tour and that was
here last year. It is difficult to gauge from that performance how well
he is suited to these type of events as it was an event ruined by the
weather and reduced to 36 holes. However, he was in 3rd position after
the 1st round and though he finished 16th after the weather disruption
it is enough to suggest that he can master this course. And in term of
current form, there are plenty of signs that he can do so. In two starts
this year, he has finished 17th in the Turtle Bay Championship (his
previous best was 23rd) and last week he fared far better than Don
Pooley when the two of them entered the final round in joint first
position with Loren Roberts. He ultimately finished in 2nd place, his
best finish on the Tour to date, so should take a lot of confidence into
this week's event. |
