Merrick Bremner - 3 points each-way @ 12-1 (Betfred 1/4 1,2,3)

With George Coetzee getting his maiden off his back last month, and happy with his new coach, he is clearly the man to beat as the Investec Cup changes courses from Millvale onto the much shorter Lost City track. However, he does carry the burden of huge pressure - not only winning the Bonus Pool of this mini-series of tournamants, but also a place in the top 50 and a slot at The Masters. He undoutdedly has the talent but has been frustrated by fiddly tracks before and at a best of 8-11 can be taken on.

Maiden and European Tour qualifier Lucas Bjerrgaard was a selection a couple of times last saeson on the Challenge Tour. He hasn't won yet, but has settled into the South African swing with aplomb, recording 11/21/2/9 form figures in his last four events. It won't be long before some silverware but I would have preferred him if they had stayed on the longer course, especially given his driving length, and he hasn't proven that he can actually cross the line as yet, stalling somewhat today on a favoured course.

Instead, with short track lover Jaco Van Zyl probably too far out of it now, and JBE Kruger too unreliable, take the solid improver Merrick Bremner to challenge strongly on a course with everything in his favour.

Bremner  is sponsored by the sponsors(!) Investec and is clearly enjoying the freedom of playing without many worries. He admits the deal has allowed him to play steadier, more patient golf, and recent results indicate that he is going the right way, with a 17th in the home Open, 10th at the Nelson Mandela and 9th at Tshwane. Bremner knows the shorter course well, finishing 3/15/13 in the last three events held here and it is to his credit that he has managed to stay within three of the lead through Millvale. I fancy that local knowledge to be of huge advantage over the weekend and 12-1 looks too big for a player that can step up on the handful of career wins at a slightly lower level.
