Accenture Match Play Championship

First round matchup plays (1.5 pts):

Colin Montgomerie to beat Nick Price +103 @ Pinnacle
Can't say Monty is my favourite player but his long game is in good shape and after Price's very poor show at the Nissan this week I would make Monty a slight favourite. Price is one of the few players in the world who Monty could conceivably out-putt and if he does he will surely win. He should find these greens more to his liking than the excessively grainy ones in Malaysia last week and should enjoy playing against one of the game's gentlemen: these factors could well see him shoot a good score.

Adam Scott to beat Miguel Jimenez -138 @ Bet365 & Victor Chandler

When Scott putts well he is a match for any player in the world, just as he showed here last year. He must have been looking forward to coming back and does so in good form after his 2nd in Australia, so nearly reeling in the 'uncatchable' Els. With my thinking being that Jimenez plays best in the hot, sticky conditions he has revelled in recently, I reckon the cold and wet conditions here will not be to his liking at all; to me, everything points to Scott winning comfortably.

First round update: 2-0; +3 pts

Both matches went a long way, although Scott was always in command and produced two fine iron shots when the pressure was really on, on their final two holes.

Second round matchup plays (1.5 pts):

Fredrik Jacobson to beat Thomas Bjorn +110 @ Sirbet, Bet365, Paddy Power

I just get the feeling that Jacobson, with his incredible short game, will turn out to be one of the very best in the world at Matchplay. Bjorn did little wrong yesterday although still not as well as Jacobson, who said he was very happy indeed with his game. A close match to call but the price simply demands an interest.

Robert Allenby to beat Adam Scott -110 @ Bet365

Allenby scored several under par yesterday and hit the vast majority of fairways, something which is very important with the course so wet and the rough so tough. Scott, in contrast, hit only around three fairways and said he got less comfortable as the match went on. Interesting to read that he feels he also didn't play well here last year, until the better semi-final with Woods, so very possibly he's been flattered by his wins on the course and he'll have to suddenly improve greatly to have any chance today. I can't believe Allenby is outsider with Bet365.

Kenny Perry to beat Steve Flesch -122 @ Pinnacle

Both players played well yesterday but Perry is much more reliable and likely to repeat today. As expected, he hit it long and straight yesterday and every facet of his game was in tip-top shape. He had a much less gruelling match than Flesch which just increases confidence even more. Perry is quite simply not a man to mess with when his game is hot.

Stewart Cink to beat Colin Montgomerie -118 @ Pinnacle

Monty scraped home yesterday against the expected poor showing of Nick Price but he still struggled desperately on the greens and afterwards re-iterated how the course really does not suit him. Contrast that with Cink, who was around 5 under for his round in destroying Choi, who himself scored at least as well as Monty, and obviously sank a good number of putts.

Chad Campbell to beat Loren Roberts -120 @ Olympic
Roberts scraped home yesterday despite shooting over par and is generally not in the same league as Campbell. The soft conditions must be hindering this very short hitter and when you read that Campbell hit lots of fairways yeaterday and that he's "playing really well, probably the best I've played all year" this match hits you as being one which could easily be over pretty early.

Look for spread recommendations, when the prices come out, on possibly the last three picks here, as any potential big wins in these matches look much more likely to come from our picks.

Second round update: 3-2; +1.08 pts
Monty was unbelievably around 7 under in demolishing Cink and the latter has cost us so much lately he will be now be avoided!
