Volvo Masters of Asia
Outright plays (1.5 units):
Prayad Marksaeng to win 14/1 e.w. @ SkyBet
Disappointing effort from this books this week. There was good coverage
last year and even some matchups, but this year only SkyBet offer
outright odds. They only offer the same odds to win as he was available
for a top-5 place last week, but he did little to discourage backing him
again, especially in his native country where he has been a winner on
the Asian PGA Tour. He should certainly be the leading Thai player with
Thongchai Jaidee in poor form and returning from finishing 128th at the
PGA Tour Q-School last week.
Daniel Chopra to win 20/1 e.w. @ SkyBet
SkyBet do seem to be a little generous with this Swede who was raised in
Delhi from the age of seven and has been a multiple-winner in India,
Taiwan and Malaysia. He is a regular on this Tour with top-10 finishes
in three of his five Asian PGA Tour starts this year, finishing 16th
(Singapore Masters) and 6th (Malaysian Open) in the two co-sanctioned
events. He has concentrated on the Nationwide Tour this year, which is a
huge step up in class from this Tour, where was 3rd in All-Round Ranking
and finished just $28,000 outside an automatic PGA Tour Card for next
season. It didn't matter as he coasted to a 6th place finish last week
in the Q-School. Barring fatigue from that event, he is playing at level
well in excess of that required to win this event.
Gwang-Soo Choi to win 66/1 e.w. @ SkyBet
The winner of 10 events in South Korea, Choi has played relatively few
tournaments outside his home country. However, he did finish 5th in the
China Open in his last start and was also a top-10 finisher in his
previous entry into that event (2001). At 43 years of age, he is not
looking to go full-time on this Tour, but is a good enough player to be
a contender whenever he plays in Asia, even with it is outside Korea.
Final update: 0-3; -4.50 units
Marksaeng 13th
Chopra 39th
Choi 57th
Not even a sniff of a place win. Did manage to give the winner a
mention though .... but only when citing reasons to oppose him!
