Senior British Open
FINAL UPDATE: 1-2; +0.00pts
Weibring 61st
Kite 2nd
Quigley 22nd
The tournament ended a couple of hours too late. After 10 holes in
the final round, Kite had a two-stroke over the rest of the field; four
holes later he was three shots behind Oakley. He did finish just one
shot out of a playoff, but he should have taken his chances earlier on
that back nine.
Outright plays (2pts):
D.A. Weibring to win 20/1 e.w. @

Avoiding the 3/1 favourite who should be too good for this field
and instead siding with three players with a good record in this event:
they all finished in the top-10 at Turnberry last year. Weibring had
been 2nd by a single shot to Carl mason after the 2nd and 3rd round, but
slipped to 5th after a final round 73. It was only his fourth start as a
senior, but he would win on the Champions Tour later that year and again
in May. In the top-5 on the Money List, he is one of the best players on
the Champions Tour and should be a strong contender again this year.
Tom Kite to win 20/1 e.w. available generally
Kite never won the Open Championship, but he did finish 2nd to Jack
Nicklaus at St. Andrews in 1978 and finished in the top-10 as late as
1997 at Royal Troon. So there is nothing wrong with his links
credentials and he showed that when finishing 4th in this event last
year. In decent form with a number of high finishes recently, he is also
very capable of winning this event.
Dana Quigley to win 33/1 @
Stan James,
BlueSq
and
Tote
It is understandable that a player who plays in every event on the
schedule will have his best finishes at the start of the season and
sporadically thereafter. He seems to be back in a run of form at the
moment with two top-5 finishes in his last three starts and a week's
break from competitive golf would have done him some good as well as
increase his determination to get back into action this week. He never
played in the Open Championship, but a top-10 finish last year was an
impressive first attempt on a British links course. One year on and
another top-10 finish should be assured.
