Brewerton 22nd

Both were on the fringes of contention for a top-4 place all week

Last week's players competed in a hilly course in oppressive humidity
and 39 degrees Celsius conditions, so they are best avoided this week!
Well, that's the theory, but the best value odds are on two players who
only played two rounds in Thailand and so should have recovered much
better than those who showed better form last week. Fatigue will be a
factor as wind is normally a feature in Tenerife and the long-range
weather forecast is for quite strong winds over the weekend. Wind- and
Tenerife-specialists should come to the fore this week. And there are
none moreso than Brewerton who has finished 2nd in the last two Tenerife
Ladies Opens; the first as an amateur when she held the lead after the
2nd and 3rd rounds and was denied by a single shot when Elisabeth Esterl
birdied the last two holes to win, and the 2nd in her rookie season last
year. She was also very unlucky in the Wales WPGA Championship of Europe
in 2003 when Shani Waugh holed a 74-foot putt on the last hole to deny
her the first Tour victory by an amateur since 1984. This season she has
shown good form in South Africa and Australia and refreshed and back in
familiar climates, she should have a very good chance of securing that
elusive victory this week. Having finished 3rd and 10th in the other two
Spanish events last year, it really should be only a matter of time
before she wins in this region. Minea Blomqvist to win 33/1 e.w.

Blomqvist did win in her rookie year last year when she was a
wire-to-wire winner in Hungary and it enabled her to finish as leading
rookie on the Tour last year by finishing in 7th place in the Money
List, one place above Brewerton. Like her Welsh counterpart, she comes
into this event with good form in South Africa and Australia and only
two rounds played in Thailand. And like Brewerton, she has a good record
in Tenerife. She was the leader after the 1st and 2nd rounds last year
and though she slipped back with a 3rd round 77 in the high winds of
Saturday, she still finished 4th. Just as good a prospect as Brewerton,
they could easily be battling for the top-spot on the Order of Merit
this year. |
